Many of us know that we would benefit from establishing healthier nutrition patterns, getting regular exercise, and taking time to de-stress. Unfortunately, knowing and doing are not the same thing. It's hard to get motivated to change behaviors, even when we know it's going to benefit us in the long run, and even when we know what steps will help us build health and wellness.
This is where habits come in. When we change our regular, daily patterns - often small behaviors - we can start to make progress on goals and see real change. It's hard to build new habits.
Luckily, talented experts have decoded some of the tricks for success, and science supports many practical ways to build habits, watch this TED talk for more insight.
Gretchen Rubin unpacks our motivation and personal patterns, and provides guidance based on individual styles that she calls tendencies.
She even offers a quiz for people to understand their tendencies. Listen to Gretchen share information with Dan Harris on 10% Happier, where they discuss habits and tendencies on this podcast episode.
James Clear plays with the concept of making small changes with bit impacts. He emphasizes the importance of building a system for success.
Listen to James share information about his book, atomic habits with psychologist Adam Grant here.
Dr. Fogg leverages the power of behavioral research to recommend tricks for making tiny changes to shift habits. He talks about his approach on several podcasts, linked here, including an episode of Armchair Expert.
Hear James Clear talk about his approach to forming atomic habits.
